The area around Arles is famous from the paintings of Vincent van Gogh, who fell in love the stunning natural surroundings of the Les Alpilles mountains and picturesque Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Be sure to ride along the small roads and visit the many villages. The caves at the town of Baux-de-Provence come highly recommended. In these caves, famous paintings are projected onto the rock walls using light (Carrières de Lumières). It is a magnificent sight! On the way back, have lunch at Le Bistrot du Paradou, where France’s rich and famous also enjoy dining. There are countless famous sights, so lovers of culture will have plenty of options. On the way from Fontvieille to Arles, there is the beautiful and imposing abbey of Montmajour, dating from the 10th century. Enjoy the stunning, scenic view from the donjon (tower) across the landscape to Arles. Thanks to its rich Roman history, Arles is home to many historic sights, including the arena and the Roman theatre. Arles borders the Camargue nature reserve, which lies between the Rhône river and the Mediterranean Sea. This marshy region is home to spectacular birds (flamingos) and the most beautiful horses and cattle. Your options here are practically limitless: boat rides, safari, horseback riding, and of course, a day spent along the white sandy beaches.
